“COLD CASE: Nobody can escape the past”

A few summers ago, before streaming and series on the internet, there were reruns on TV, and I’m not talking about the Jurassic, but from the early 2000s. Very rarely did some new product arrive, punctually blasted at absurd times of absurd days in the height of summer, which I always wondered if they were bettors or simply self-sabotaged on purpose.

Why do you have to explain to me why TV series like Friends, Ally McBeal or ER (I MEAN E.R. !!!!), were put on in August at 2.00pm!

The same fate happened to a TV series that fascinated me a lot, which began with my parents during their lunch breaks from the beach in the summer of 2006; I don’t even remember where we were and why we all went on holiday together, but I remember perfectly well that the atmospheres, the cases, the music and the colors of COLD CASE squeezed us all at the small dining table of the house by the sea, in those hours of total break in the sun is impossible unless you have the core temperature of a werewolf (and I usually look more like a vampire), and are in full digestion so anything that requires effort is naturally banned.

Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris – In the mind of the serial killer) is a young detective on the Philadelphia homicide squad; after having demonstrated great skills in solving a crime that had remained unsolved for many years, he decides to accept the proposal of his captain to enter the cold case section, which specializes in investigating crimes that have remained pending for many years and of which the perpetrators do not they still have neither face nor name. Each episode is dedicated to a different case: the episodes begin with a flashback set in the year in which the crime took place.

What immediately made us fall in love with a TV series so undervalued by the same channel that was broadcasting it, is that the soundtrack of each episode offers the most popular songs of the year in which the crime to which the protagonists took place took place. they dedicate – raise your hand if you have not been moved at least once on the always well-chosen notes of any final scene, of a random episode of the series -, and the flashbacks that review it are shot with the filmic style in vogue at the time. As if that weren’t enough, casting is something of a sublime one! The actors interpreting the same characters from the past and the present (sometimes from the distant past, present past and present), are so similar that one wonders if they do not directly cast entire families!

I don’t know why this TV series has never been properly advertised, and after a decade it continues to be relegated to summer on niche channels at unlikely times, and among other things with seven, I say SEVEN seasons available, they re-propose always the same bets.

I find it absurd, I swear!

It is a PERFECT series and believe me I am not exaggerating: there is nothing wrong or out of place, everything is fully accomplished: direction, actors, backgrounds, dialogues, music, and above all the stories, which come to totally overwhelm you as if you were living in first person those emotions. Furthermore, Cold Case has often glanced at more or less recent facts and events in American history, from the assassination of Kennedy to the Second World War, from the Korean War to that of Vietnam, from the struggles for civil rights to the escape of the exiles of Cuba, confirming its sensitivity in dealing with issues such as apartheid, feminism, the rights of homosexuals, the condition of disadvantaged neighborhoods. All this without ever evaluating criminals, who are often murderers by chance and almost never for cruelty; is a series about the victims, who have not been able to realize their dream, their life, and who are finally “freed” by doing them justice with the solution of the case.

I don’t think any majors bought it, but I suggest you browse the web to find it! It is really worth it.

There is not a single recipe that goes with this series, because in my opinion every episode deserves a suitable food as much as the music that accompanies it. But I leave you the recipe of what we were eating the first time we met Lily and her colleagues.

• ROLLED SOLE
  (the recipe is from my mom, Mena- and it’s delicious)

Ingredients for 4 people

A sole
Garlic
A sprig of rosemary
A sprig of thyme
Sage
Chives
Parsley
Extra virgin olive oil
White wine
salt
Black pepper or chilli

Method
Wash the sole under running water, dry it with a clean cloth. Then with a knife, we fillet it to remove impurities and offal. At this point, we obtain 4 fillets. On a cutting board, chop two pitted black olives, half a clove of garlic, a sprig of rosemary and one of thyme, a sprig of parsley, a few sage leaves and 3-4 strands of chives. We mix everything well with a wooden spoon. Once the filling has been prepared, we make our sole by spreading each fillet well and placing the filling on top. We roll the fish fillet on itself to form a roll and weld them all with a toothpick. In a non-stick pan, pour extra virgin olive oil, some olives cut into rounds and a clove of garlic to brown the sole fillets over medium heat, season with salt and, after a few minutes, blend everything with wine. white, cover the pot with a lid and let it cook for about five minutes.
We arrange your fillets on a serving dish, wet them with the cooking sauce and serve still hot.
