“London is a bad habit one hates to lose.”

I miss it so so much, because over the years it had become a secure destination, with its powerful smells and the accent that makes me fall in love with every citizen, with its old monuments and new architecture, with its breakfast which for me is a lunch and dinner which for me is a snack. With its illogical schedules, the people always running, endless queues, tea.

Through The Mirror

It is the city of Harry Potter, Alice, Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes, so despite the brexit, the political behavior to Italy during the emergency, and the snobbery, I will love London forever and unconditionally.

And I miss it so so much, because over the years it had become a secure destination, with its powerful smells and the accent that makes me fall in love with every citizen, with its old monuments and new architecture, with its breakfast which for me is a lunch and dinner which for me is a snack. With its illogical schedules, the people always running, endless queues, tea.

London is a gothic and sinister city, but it’s also warm and welcoming. What always strikes me about London is the sun.

Because for years, thanks to literature, films, TV series, the stories of those who had been there, I had imagined this city…

Classics: “And then there were none”

In the original UK novel all references to “Indians” or “Soldiers” were originally “Nigger”, including the island’s name, the pivotal rhyme found by the visitors, and the ten figurines. (In Chapter 7, Vera Claythorne becomes semi-hysterical at the mention by Miss Brent of “our black brothers”, which is understandable only in the context of the original name.) UK editions changed to the current definitive title in 1985. The word “nigger” was already racially offensive in the United States by the start of the 20th century, and therefore the book’s first US edition and first serialization changed the title to And Then There Were None and removed all references to the word from the book, as did the 1945 motion picture.

Through The Mirror

Ten little nigger boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self, and then there were nine. [1]

Someone I’m sure will turn up their noses because I put a crime story among the great classics of literature! But it is time that the purists open their eyes and realise that if it is the most widely read genre in the world there will be a reason, and that if they do not believe their contemporaries should admit that this little Christie’s masterpiece has nothing to be envied to today’s thrillers and noir, indeed it should be taken as an example because in its simplicity and continuous suspense is truly a hypnotic and splendid book, but it is in fact a classic given the vastness of reworkings, re-releases, re-editions and quotes!

Nine little nigger boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself, and then there were eight. [2]

“Bets and Pop Corn”

The word “responsibility” is often used throughout the novel, both in the narrative text and in the dialogue.
But who is responsible here? The media? The murderers? Bruce? Or… the spectators?
After all, it would be enough to turn off the TV to save the lives of these people. But … will they?
And you, would you do it?

Through The Mirror

Grab some red wine, popcorn and make yourself comfortable on the sofa. We bet that I will be able to enchant you?

We live in a society where no one wants to take responsibility. A man can make mistakes, but he can always say that it is because of something else, perhaps he had a very unhappy childhood, perhaps he was influenced by the politician on duty, or by the films he watches. It’s certainly not his fault!
This is a very widespread thought and over the years I have found it in real life and in films, in TV series and books. We always try to justify evil, perhaps because the idea that someone does it knowingly, with the intention of doing harm, scares us too much. It is easier if we think that that person had no choice, was disturbed, or manipulated or unconscious of bad deeds.

“«To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.»- Aldous Huxley”

I miss traveling so much, that despite being very backward with the English part, despite being writing little lately and relying mostly on the reblog, I decided to add a new topic. It is a perversion of life to make more and more commitments than necessary, to start new projects while not having closed … Continua a leggere “«To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.»- Aldous Huxley”

“The First Love is never forgotten… ( but which?)” – part III

Through The Mirror

Previosly: “The First Love is never forgotten… ( but which?)” – part I“The First Love is never forgotten… ( but which?)” – part II

The important stages. So first kiss. First I love you. First time.

First time.

Omg how vague we are. What an insurmountable taboo. “First time”. The first time of what ???? Who do the dishes? What did you read a book?
No.

The first time you have sex.
Sex. I said it. And I wasn’t thunderstruck!

Everyone in nature does it, so why all this fear of naming it? It’s not Voldemort!

However, my first time was not with The footballer. Throughout the chaos, sex has never been consumed.

How it happened that didn’t happen I have no idea!

The Shy.

Before him I had been dating only guys of a certain type, of the assholes type, so to speak. One way or another…

“A Saturday afternoon with Bonita Faye”

I was about 11 years old; I was bored because I had already finished the new horror book in the series, I was crazy about; my father came to me and handed me a “grown-up” novel <read it, you’ll like it >.

If there is a person I trust in everything (especially when it comes to reading) it is my father, so I took this book, and without even asking him what it was about, I sat on the floor with my back against the radiator (habit that I still have today …) and I started it.

“After all, I killed only once every forty years. I had time to die, before the urge returned.”[1]

Saturday afternoon in October, uncertain weather, neither hot enough to play outdoors, nor so cold as to want to take refuge inside, that weather that makes you go around dressed like a fool with snow boots and a tank top, so to speak.

“The blank page”

I have papers scattered all over the desk. What remains of it under the mountain of dirty clothes that I have piled on it and that I have to decide to start washing. Ah how I understand my mother who got angry if as soon as we started the washing machine, we decided to put … Continua a leggere “The blank page”

“Appearance or Protagonist?”

There is a beautiful monologue in the film "The Holiday", entrusted not by chance to my favourite character (the only one who has nothing to do with the love story), in which a melancholic Kate Winslet is asked as she never continues to act as a friend, shoulder, appearance, when it is clear that she … Continua a leggere “Appearance or Protagonist?”
