When I started the blog five years ago, I didn't really know what to expect. I had so many thoughts, so many stories, so many experiences, and it seemed nice to share them. Over time, many collaborators have joined, some with their advice, thoughts, experiences and stories. Others with a culinary contribution, still others with … Continua a leggere “Five Years Ago…”

“Keepers, Erebon, soup and beer”
the final book is coming….
When someone I know writes a book it’s a problem. Yes, because it could be the masterpiece of the Century, but more likely I might not like it, but knowing the author, I face the dilemma: “should I be ruthless and tell him/her? Or should I play along with it?
Working as a freelance editor, I have to capture every flaw before every merit (and there are a lot in a book! Both: flaws and merits), so I get always a bit confused when someone I know tells me that he has written a book.
And if this person is my brother, and if, besides making me read a preview he also asks me to check it then the question becomes epic.
My brother has always been a great little genius, so I never had doubts that the book was well written and the plot was fluid.
But would I…

“Three writers: One story”
And having so many genres inside, it is a novel suitable for everyone, it can excite for the poignant love story, for the mystery, for the betrayed friendship, for the inspiration that does not arrive. In an interview the author stated that with this book he aimed to get on his readers the same effect that the TV series Homeland had on him (series I will talk about!):
“You watch one episode, then another, then you start doing stupid things like watching four in a row at night so you can’t work the next day … My ambition was to achieve the same result with a book”
” ‘In our society, Marcus, the most admired men are those who build bridges, skyscrapers, and empires. But in reality, the proudest and most admirable are those who manage to build love. Because there is no greater or more difficult undertaking.’”[1]
Perhaps 779 pages are too many, he could have cut here and there and a great thriller would have come out anyway, yes, maybe the writing is still a bit unripe and the twists and turns are abundant but too isolated towards the end.
All reproaches that are easily found around and that made Joel Dicker[2] the perfect alter ego of the protagonist of his novel: Marcus Goldman, a young and successful writer who finds himself trapped in the writer’s block after the first success. Reading this book was like reading several books at the same time. Not only because it is a combination of different…

“Life is not a Movie”
Life is not a movie.
Life is not a novel.
Life is not, undoubtedly, a movie based of a novel.
Life is not a movie.
Life is not a novel.
Life is not, undoubtedly, a movie based of a novel.
I know, I did not have to tell you; But it is good to rehiterate it because from time to time we tend to forget it and it’s easy to find our selfeves complicating everything.
– And even if it was, a movie or novel I mean, my writer must have been drunk, that would explain many things, such as the systematic alternation of empty and flat periods and others when I perpetually go into trouble. –
Come on, do not tell me you have never fantasized when your hand have met the one of an unknown stranger over the last litre of milk, your eyes crossed and to “take it” <<no, you were first >> << I insist, take it >> << you are so kind, I just needed…

“The snow does not care…”
In Rome it does not happen often, and in those rare occasions when it falls, unfortunately it is a big problem because the city gets paralyzed.
But when it happens it is an extraordinary sight, an example of how nature is amazing.
Winter is a strange seasonwhich lasts exactly like all the others but it seems longer, it might be for the cold, because we mount up so many commitments, because the days are shorter and you are likely to leave the house when it’s dark and returning after dark.
The sky is dark, blue-grey, the streets are busy, parks are empty if we not count some unfortunate person who has no other place to go.
But there is a moment when everything disappears, everything seems muffled and beautiful, almost magical: when it snows.
In Rome it does not happen often, and in those rare occasions when it falls, unfortunately it is a big problem because the city gets paralyzed.
But when it happens it is an extraordinary sight, an example of how nature is amazing.
In meteorology the snow is a configuration of atmospheric precipitation in the form of crystalline water…

“Yorkshire’s good manners”
A country manor, a dog, the rustling of a curtain, high ceilings, a trilling bell, the mail that is sorted, a butler who keeps order downstairs and a count who tries to affirm himself in a house full of women.
Don’t you have any idea of what I’m talking about? But it is unacceptable, my dears, you should definitely fix this!
Downton Abbey, the series created by Julian Fellowes (author of “Gosford Park”) is exactly what it takes to face theFall.
Who went to England knows that the weather is almost dull and rainy, like a melancholy memory postcard. And the Fall is like this: it looks a bit like an impressionist painting where the brushstrokes are violent, thunderous but delineate a gentle, comforting landscape. Downton Abbey fits perfectly to this type of climate and atmosphere.
“Downton Abbey” proved that drama didn’t have to be dark…or…

“Never order chicken on a First Date”
Still true
First date is quite important to understand each other , in my opinion. Yes , because it is the time when you want to impress and it shows off a number of goodies textbook . You want to look smarter , more beautiful, more pleasant, more stimulant, let’s face it , everyone has lied at least a little on the first date . But that is why I consider it a fundamental test: if, even with all the masks and magic tricks, you are not interesting, imagine it without … right ?!
I never went to the first date with the idea of finding the PerfectOne, indeed, we can say that for me it is more a social experiment, like: what would you strategically use to impress? Beauty, sympathy? Culture? Common interests? Diversity?
When it comes to me, I try to be as natural as possible, however in general there…

“Once upon a time (and still)”
Once upon a time, in a boot-like land there was, a perplexed girl who wondered why, despite being inadequate and a bad example for little girls, princesses of fairy tales always defeated villains. Saved Aurora, a poor little girl that has been relegated to live with three naughty "aunts" at the confines of civilization … Continua a leggere “Once upon a time (and still)”
