“Appearance or Protagonist?”

There is a beautiful monologue in the film “The Holiday”, entrusted not by chance to my favourite character (the only one who has nothing to do with the love story), in which a melancholic Kate Winslet is asked as she never continues to act as a friend, shoulder, appearance, when it is clear that she would have everything she needs to be a protagonist.

That’s a good question, don’t you think?

It happens to everyone to be the appearance of someone’s life, but what happens when it tends to be the appearance in one’s own?

How can we find out? And how does the circle break?

The man who is changing radio station every thirty seconds, pressing more and more restlessly, does it because he knows what he wants and will not stop until he gets it? Or is it simply a nervous tic, completely involuntary? Will he be a…

Classics: “Frankenstein, or the modern Prometheus”

I think it should be read more than watched, for this power of the message that for technical reasons is less and less in the mediated versions.

“Even broken in spirit as he is, no one can feel more deeply than he does the beauties of nature. The starry sky, the sea, and every sight afforded by these wonderful regions, seems still to have the power of elevating his soul from earth. Such a man has a double existence: he may suffer misery, and be overwhelmed by disappointments; yet, when he has retired into himself, he will be like a celestial spirit that has a halo around him, within whose circle no grief or folly ventures.”
― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

The eruption of the volcano Mount Tambora in Indonesia in April 1815, in which tens of thousands of people died, caused the emission of enormous quantities of ash. According to climatologists, that eruption may also have played a role in making the summer of 1816 particularly cold and rainy throughout the Northern Hemisphere. It was in that…

“Five Years Ago…”

When I started the blog five years ago, I didn't really know what to expect. I had so many thoughts, so many stories, so many experiences, and it seemed nice to share them. Over time, many collaborators have joined, some with their advice, thoughts, experiences and stories. Others with a culinary contribution, still others with … Continua a leggere “Five Years Ago…”

Classics: “1984”

It is incredible how after more than sixty years this tragic novel is still so relevant. Tragic, because I don’t know about you but me the idea that someone can see every single action I do, that even checks what I have to think and fixes the shot if ever I’m wrong, scares me! It seems to me something horrible! Yet we are allowing it, if not at those dictatorial levels, to a more acceptable extent we are absolutely already undergoing it.
Just think of how many payments we make with credit cards (and therefore traceable), the cameras on the streets, the traffic control cameras, the PC webcam.

“Winston Smith: Does Big Brother exist?
O’Brien: Of course he exists.
Winston Smith: Does he exist like you or me?
O’Brien: You do not exist.”
George Orwell,1984

Let’s face it for some years now if we hear the words “Big Brother”, we associate them with the famous reality show and no longer with Orwell’s masterpiece …
Many people are certain that it was the book that inspired the show and not the other way around, and I think this speaks volumes about the level of general culture of our beautiful country!
But fear not, you can make up for it!
First of all, just look at the dates, the dystopian future controlled by the big eye described by George Orwell was written in 1949, while the trash program that locked ten people in a house under 24h cameras was only imported into Italy in 2000.
And then it…

“A Long Summer with « My Brilliant Friend» “

Summer is still far away, although the first days of intense heat are coming – even if go together with three or four days of rain and cold. – But, by booking now, perhaps, a trip to the Sorrento’s coast will not cost you a fortune.

There is something magical in the scent of lemons at sunset.

Through The Mirror

Have you ever been to Sorrento in July? with the scent of lemon that spreads everywhere, it mixes with the sea, with fish, with the fried food of street vendors, with freshly baked biscuits.

Have you ever been on one of the wonderful terraces looking at the Golfo, sipping limoncello * and enjoying mozzarella in carrozza[1] or other specialties?

No?

What are you waiting for?

Life is one and some whim must be satisfied!

“Time”

Quarantine. In fact, forty[1] days have passed, and apart from the two times I went at the supermarket or to throw out the garbage, dressed halfway between a robber and the witch,, I spent the time at home. #StayHome #staysafe I miss traveling so much like water in the desert. I miss work more than … Continua a leggere “Time”

“Six-hundred Seconds”

That’s how I found this little precious book. Fearing that I was wasting my time (and reason) behind a window wet with tears of Heaven. “Ten minutes long”, a title that immediately catched me. A title that was necessary for me.

Through The Mirror

The rain falls slowly, almost bored of having to do so, on the window glass from which you can see at times and blurry the others’ lives. Is it for duty or pleasure that the neighbour is taking out the dog despite the cold? Is it because he loves his pet to the point of getting pneumonia? Or because his house is tight and maybe needs to run away, at least a little. Just for a while.
And the girl who cries at the bus stop, what is she thinking of? Had she lose a lover, a friendship? Or maybe she just got a bad score and does not want to admit it to her family for fear of ruining her Christmas holidays?

26_ Per dieci minutiThe music continues to do its duty and composes a perfect soundtrack to cover the thoughts. Or at least it tries to do so.

“Pancakes, Brandy & Manipulation”

Naively, I was convinced that the quiz I was taking part to with my class was an educational and fun idea to learn something new. But just before the red light marked the REC, a producer (who was then called “director’s slave”) came to give me the answers.
Not the questions, the answers !!!!
Even today I persist outraged!

Through The Mirror

The first time I was in a TV studio I was enchanted by the dazzling lights, the multicolours panels and …. by make-up artists, prompts, hunchbacks, and a thousand other artefacts that are committed to making true what is so fake.

Not the questions, the answers !!!!
Even today I persist outraged!
First of all because I would have known the answers by myself!
Secondly because it was all a scam!
My team had to win because “more telegenic” than the adversary.
That’s all.
No worth.
