“BE GOOD”

At the end of this reading, I had two thoughts well impressed in my mind: I am very proud of what I do to the extent that I can, and Dear Jesus, please do not give up on humanity even when it deserves it …

Through The Mirror

” “Be good.” Every time God thinks about the marvelous simplicity of that sentence, his unique and original commandment, another thought automatically takes over: that asshole of Moses. What kind of arrogant dickhead throws the one commandment he has been given down the toilet and pulls out ten invented from scratch? “[1]

At the end of June, the Einaudi promotion arrived in the bookstore, when placing it on the relevant shelf a cover leaps to my eye: a smiling and winking Instagram Jesus on a red-orange background. The title “The second coming” is a nice provocation and considering that it is next to tomes of a certain socio-political importance it makes me laugh. It intrigues me. I read the plot. I read the opening words. Irreverent.

I’ll put it back.

Three days later I take it back, I read the first five pages. I laugh. I cry. I ponder.

Twenties atmospheres, the age of jazz, prohibition[1], lights, parties, beautiful cars and cocktail dresses. How not to be fascinated? One immediately thinks of jewels, make-up, sets. To wealth!

Probably those who lived these years would not really agree with the imagery that was created around the magical twenties, since struck by lights and colors, it is easy to forget that that decade is right between the two world wars, and that all that exaggeration, display of power, money and happiness served to cover a majority of the population in misery and depression.

The manifesto of the decade, at least of the American one, we know well how different lives were in Europe !, is undoubtedly THE GREAT GATSBY, issued in 1925 by the skilled hands of Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1900). The novel, for those few who did not know it, is based on the indecipherable and ambiguous figure…

“The World Emerged from FANTASY”

It is a captivating trilogy capable of involving at any age, in a different way. We became so enthusiastic and attached to Troisi’s way of writing that we subsequently also read “Legends” and “Wars” always linked to the Emerged World, with equally strong and intelligent protagonists. And with plots that are not at all obvious, and above all a happy ending not always achieved.

Through The Mirror

August 2005, I just finished high school, what will it be like to give a gift ???
It’s my brother’s birthday again, how could this happen? Oh yes that’s right, it’s an anniversary, or a recurrence that falls every year, and every time I don’t know what to give him.
No, not right now. To date I have an endless list of gifts that I know for sure he will like him, but that fatal year my brother was in the height of adolescence, that is, that period in which “everything sucks, you all suck, that’s disgust”, so understand what could make him “a little less disgusting” was not easy …

Books.

I have no other choice. Although home libraries are about to burst it is really the only thing with which I have an attempt not to see the expression of someone who has just eaten a rotten lemon…

“Holi, Spices and Magic”

It was Spring – Spring is especially felt in India, the traditional Holi festival, known as the “Festival of Colours”, is held. Hundreds of people overflow into the streets and throw coloured powders at each other until they cover everything with bright colours made from flower petals.

Through The Mirror

A few years ago, with my friend Ilaria, we used to exchange books – a practice that you can only do with whom you really trust a lot, and which I no longer use today. –
Usually every two weeks. They cost so much and we only had pocket money available, so lend us the books was the only way to be able to read more.

In one of these exchanges, I gave her “The Mists of Avalon” to read, and she lent me Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s “Mistress of Spices” a novel with an exotic and mysterious air.

Magic was the common denominator.

But while the novel of Zimmer Bradley had a classical mythology, this is the tradition of Indian mythology.

The story of Tilo, the protagonist, is not obvious. From a heavy childhood and a somewhat proud character since childhood, she arrives on an island hidden from…

“See Naples and die”

The smell of fried food. If you were to ask me what I identify Naples with, before the sea, the warmness, the fish, the pizza, the alleys, the poetry, the music, the people screaming from window to window. I would say the smell of fried food. Naples is my second home, having almost the whole … Continua a leggere “See Naples and die”

“London is a bad habit one hates to lose.”

It is the city of Harry Potter, Alice, Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes, so despite the brexit, the political behavior to Italy during the emergency, and the snobbery, I will love London forever and unconditionally. And I miss it so so much, because over the years it had become a secure destination, with its powerful smells … Continua a leggere “London is a bad habit one hates to lose.”

“Six-hundred Seconds”

That’s how I found this little precious book. Fearing that I was wasting my time (and reason) behind a window wet with tears of Heaven. “Ten minutes long”, a title that immediately catched me. A title that was necessary for me.

Through The Mirror

The rain falls slowly, almost bored of having to do so, on the window glass from which you can see at times and blurry the others’ lives. Is it for duty or pleasure that the neighbour is taking out the dog despite the cold? Is it because he loves his pet to the point of getting pneumonia? Or because his house is tight and maybe needs to run away, at least a little. Just for a while.
And the girl who cries at the bus stop, what is she thinking of? Had she lose a lover, a friendship? Or maybe she just got a bad score and does not want to admit it to her family for fear of ruining her Christmas holidays?

26_ Per dieci minutiThe music continues to do its duty and composes a perfect soundtrack to cover the thoughts. Or at least it tries to do so.

Did I buy…
